![]() As one would expect, West Side Story is set in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, NY and involves a romance between the male title character Anton (belonging to the white gang the Jets) and Maria (belonging to the Puerto Rican gang the Sharks). The play, while focused on the love story and inherent problems within, also brings up serious social commentary on inequality, violence, poverty, and other social problems plaguing American society in the middle of the last century and even still today. Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim began plans for writing West Side Story in 1949. Originally, a purchase of West Side Story performance tickets was supposed to entail seeing a love story caled East Side Story, about an Italian-American Catholic boy (originally cast as James Dean until his abrupt death in 1955 just before production) who fell in love with a Jewish girl around passover in Manhattan. However, after a couple of years of influence on the writers and producers, the Italian-American boy became Polish-American and the Jewish girl was changed into a Puerto Rican girl named Maria. Judging from the overall success of the show, this change was an excellent idea. Before going on tour, patrons were able to purchase West Side Story tickets on 732 separate nights, which was a substantial amount of showings in the mid 1900s. Once West Side Story shot out of broadway like a bat out of hell, the performance and theater world would never be the same. Patrons were able to purchase West Side Story tickets in every state in the country and, while to a somewhat lesser extent, still today. Oftentimes this great American play is performed in schools, in small communities and towns, and continues to fill our hearts and haunt our dreams. This play is truly one of the finest in history putting Leonard Bernstein on the map, making him the first American theatrical composer to be a house hold name.
