Fans that have Stanley Cup tickets get to see two teams square off to fight for the most important award in all of hockey. Originally called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, the Stanley Cup was originally made to simply be a decorative bowl worth less than fifty dollars in 1892. The Cup was donated by Lord Stanley, Governor General of Canada and was originally given to the top amateur hockey team in Canada. Fans that have tickets to the Stanley Cup nowadays see a completely different system. In the late 1800s, in order to win the Stanley Cup, you simply had to challenge the current cup-holder and beat them, much like a boxing championship belt. If you beat the defending champions, you had possession of the Stanley Cup for one year, and then you could be challenged again. If you lost, you would have to wait one year to challenge again. 1926 was the first year that Stanley Cup ticket holders would see a game played solely by NHL teams. This was the beginning of the more modern system of play. Traditionally if you had a Stanley Cup ticket, you may see a foreign team challenge an NHL team for the Stanley Cup. However, since a 1947 decision by the trustees, the Stanley Cup would only be awarded to NHL teams only. The Stanley Cup itself and the league tournament together represent a contest with some of the richest history in all of sports. When a team wins the Stanley Cup they get to engrave their names and possibly add a new band to the cup itself. Having the Stanley Cup is the most important thing to any hockey team. If you want to be a part of this rich history, purchase Stanley Cup tickets today from MTC Tickets. | |
