Along the long road to the NCAA Championship, all teams must pass through the regional round of the Tournament, known as the Sweet Sixteen by holders of Regional Round tickets. With the tournament divided into four regions, the regional round represents the semifinals and finals of each region. In each region, there are sixteen teams, and each receives a seed number one through sixteen. In order to keep the tournament as competitive as possible and enjoyable for fans with Sweet Sixteen tickets, the regions are made as even as possible. This competitiveness has driven the interest in the Tournament and the sale of Sweet Sixteen basketball tickets. Since the tournament first began in 1939, fans with Sweet Sixteen tickets have seen many memorable performances in the regional round of the tournament. In 1958, Oscar Robertson set the individual record for points in a game with 56. In 1990, holders of Sweet Sixteen basketball tickets watched the UNLV Rebels establish the record for most points in a game by a team with 131. The 2006 Sweet Sixteen games are scheduled to be played at the MCI Center in Washington D.C. Originally opened in 1997, the MCI Center should as good of a home to holders of Sweet Sixteen Basketball tickets as it has been to Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals fans. The MCI Center will open its doors to more than 20,000 fans with Sweet Sixteen Basketball tickets during this year’s tournament. |
