While Maryland Terrapins basketball was for a long time overshadowed by Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouses like the North Carolina Tar Heels and Duke Blue Devils, the team has more recently become a consistent contender for both the ACC Title as well as the NCAA Championship, as holders of Maryland basketball tickets have watched the team win both since the turn of the century. As fans with Maryland tickets know well, this success and the arrival of Head Coach Gary Williams are not coincidences. As a graduate of Maryland University in 1968, holders of Maryland basketball tickets were happy to welcome Coach Williams back to the University in 1989. While it did take several years for Williams to build a winning team, fans with Maryland tickets know that later is better than never. In 2002, Williams became the first coach in more than 25 years to lead his alma mater to a national championship, as he brought the first NCAA Title in school history to the holders of Maryland Terrapins basketball tickets. For this success, he was named both National and ACC Coach of the Year. Also, due in large part to success like this, holders of Maryland tickets were happy to see Coach Williams’s induction into the Maryland Hall of Fame in 2005. In the same year that holders of Maryland basketball tickets experienced the team’s first ever national title, they also saw the emergence of the team’s new home, the Comcast Center. Since then, the Center has welcomed nearly 18,000 holders of Maryland Terrapins basketball tickets to every game, including up to 4,000 Maryland students with Maryland basketball tickets who sit in the large student section. A favorite attraction among holders of Maryland tickets at the Comcast Center is the Walk of Fame. This exhibit is a collection of photographs which immortalizes the accomplishments of Maryland teams and individuals in athletics since the formation of the University in 1920. On this wall, holders of Maryland tickets can see nearly 500 All-Americans, 25 Olympians, 35 National Championship teams, and 26 individual national championships from all sports. The central icon of the wall, however, is the 2002 NCAA Tournament Championship trophy, which allows fans with Maryland Terrapins basketball tickets to relive that magical season every time they enter the Comcast Center.
