In 1904, the first University of Arizona basketball game was played. Now, more than 100 years later, the team continues to thrill holders of Arizona Wildcats basketball tickets with their outstanding play and tough, competitive attitude. Much of this attitude comes from head coach Lute Olson, who has proven himself to be not only one of the top active coaches in the nation, but also in the history of college basketball. In 1983, fans with Arizona basketball tickets were thrilled to find out that Lute Olson would be taking over as the team’s head coach. In just two short seasons, Olson transformed the team from a mediocre team with a losing record to a postseason qualifier, and fans responded with increased support and increased sales of Arizona tickets. Now, more than twenty years later, holders of Arizona Wildcats basketball tickets have come to expect not only postseason appearances, but also postseason wins; and Olson has not disappointed. Through the 2005 season, fans with Arizona basketball tickets have watched Lute Olson lead the Wildcats to eleven Pac-10 Conference Championships, twenty-one consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, four Final Four Appearances, and, of course, one National Championship. It is this type of success that has earned Olson acclaim from not only holders of Arizona Wildcats basketball tickets, but also from the NCAA itself. Although being named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year seven times is a great honor, it is nothing compared to what holders of Arizona tickets saw in 2002. In June of that year, Lute Olson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, an honor bestowed to only the most elite coaches and players of college basketball. Olson continues to coach, hoping to bring a National Championship back to the fans with Arizona Wildcats basketball tickets once again. Throughout the season, holders of Arizona basketball tickets will continue to come together at McKale Center, the home of the Wildcats since 1973. Named for former athletic director and coach J.F. “Pop” McKale, the Center welcomes around 15,000 fans with Arizona tickets to each game, as they cheer their Wildcats on to victory.
