Golf fans first began purchasing Ryder Cup tickets in 1927, when the competition was between the United States and only Great Britain. After holders of Ryder Cup golf tickets watched the American team dominate the Cup for nearly fifty years, it became clear that a change needed to be made. That change came when the PGA Tour of America and the PGA European Tour decided that America would play the best golfers of Europe, not Great Britain. Since then, fans with Ryder Cup tickets have seen more balanced victories on either side. Since the tournament first began, holders of Ryder Cup golf tickets have seen a fairly strict format that the tournament has followed every year. Each team captain chooses twelve players from the PGA Tour of America or the PGA European Tour, respectively. Fans with Ryder Cup tickets then watch the teams square-off in three different match types. First, there are eight foursome matches. These matches pit teams of two against one another, and teammates alternate shots on the same ball. Second, teams play fourball matches. Again with teams of two against one another, in fourball each player plays his own ball, and best score of the partners is the team score for each hole. Finally, the teams simply play twelve singles matches, which pit one golfer against one other golfer in standard matchplay. One point is rewarded for each win and one half-point is awarded for any tie. Once all of the matches have been concluded, the team with the most points is crowned Ryder Cup Champion in front of the numerous fans with Ryder Cup golf tickets.
