Styx began as a uniquely artsy progressive rock band in the ‘60s called the Tradewinds featuring current Styx members and brothers John and Chuck Panozzo and Dennis DeYoung. During the ‘70s, the Tradewinds became TW4 and they picked up a few more band members: James Young and John Curulewski. Finally after playing some psychedelic type prog-rock in night clubs and small venues, TW4 became Styx and signed with a record label and began selling Styx concert tickets. They immediately released their self-titled debut album followed a year later by Styx II. However, Styx never really broke into the mainstream music during the first half of the seventies due to their inability to distinguish themselves from the other prog-rock bands of the era. Eventually however, Styx would sell plenty of concert tickets to fans nationwide.

Styx finally had their break when some of their earlier music started getting some airplay in Chicago. Lady from their second album ended up topping out at number 6 on the chart and Styx II became a certified gold record. Styx was finally experiencing some success that would continue for the next four or five years with the releases of singles like Come Sail Away and Renegade and the fans responded by buying plenty of Styx concert tickets. However, the band would break up soon after because of dispute about which direction they should the band was heading.
