![]() One of the most successful recording groups of all time, Genesis has conquered the charts with such high profile band members as Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Beginning as an English progressive rock band in the late 60s, Genesis would ride a wave of success through different band members and genres only to end up being one of the top grossing music groups in pop/rock. Recording their first album in 1969, Genesis began as Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford and Christ Stewart. Their name originated from Jonathan King the record producer who first noticed the band’s talent. He named them Genesis as if to say, their music represented the pinnacle of his career as a record producer. As if he could never find anyone as serious, and talented as this band –truth be told he never did. Genesis’s wildly popular ride to the top would start with him. Peter Gabriel, a huge star now in his own right, fronted the band from 1970 to 1980. During this period, Gabriel led Genesis to being one of the most infamous live acts in the seventies. Everyone was raving about Genesis, and tons of Genesis concert tickets were being sold. Peter Gabriel eventually decided that he wanted to leave Genesis saying, “The vehicle we had built as a co-op to serve our songwriting became our master and had cooped us up inside the success we had wanted. It affected the attitudes and the spirit of the whole band. The music had not dried up and I still respect the other musicians, but our roles had set in hard.” Whether that makes sense or not, Gabriel was out and Genesis needed someone to fill the void. While Phil Collins may seem like an obvious choice to many people now, Collins was actually the voice coach for all the potentials to take Gabriel’s place. Collins wanted a chance and eventually he got it. Soon after, many people were saying that Collins sounded more like Gabriel than Peter Gabriel. In true Genesis style, the band became even more successful with Collins and continued to be until 1996 when Collins left for a solo career as well leaving the band without a frontman. In 2006 Banks, Collins, and Rutherford announced that they would do a tremendous world wide tour beginning November 2006 and ending Late 2007.
